Best Gold ETF? (IAU) (GDX) (GLD) (GDXJ)

Looking at gold ETFs right now. From I gather they break down into two major categories - gold bullion holding companies and gold mining companies.

Bullion
GLD is the biggest, but has a much higher expense ratio than IAU at 0.25%, so that seems like an easy choice.

“The iShares Gold Trust (the ‘Trust’) seeks to reflect generally the performance of the price of gold.”

Mining
Mining is a little bit harder to differentiate between funds, but GDX (and a GDX Junior?) seem like the best… GDX has an expense ratio of 0.52%, so a little high.

“VanEck Vectors® Gold Miners ETF (GDX®) seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the NYSE Arca Gold Miners Index (GDMNTR), which is intended to track the overall performance of companies involved in the gold mining industry.”

“VanEck Vectors® Junior Gold Miners ETF (GDXJ®) seeks to replicate as closely as possible, before fees and expenses, the price and yield performance of the MVIS® Global Junior Gold Miners Index (MVGDXJTR), which is intended to track the overall performance of small-capitalization companies that are involved primarily in the mining for gold and/or silver.”

How much should I diversify into gold? Off hand thinking 5% into IAU and 1% into GDX.

I split the different and went with IAU and GDX to capture both points (as my primary goal is stability… a little diversification into both bullion and the miners can’t hurt).

Bought about 5% of my total portfolio

@NoMas, what are your thoughts on gold and other precious metals?

Update - decided to shift to GLDM. Its a subset of GLD, just with lower share prices and - much more importantly - much lower expense ratio. Expense ratio is critical for an asset which doesn’t produce a yield and may be held for years.
